First, let's make a few assumptions before we begin.  Let's assume you are the head of a typical family of four, and you spend an average of $125 per week on groceries and other miscellaneous household items such as cleaners, medicine, cosmetics, toothpaste, hair and skin care, weight management products, and all the other non-food items you buy every month from your local grocery store or discount store.  $125 per week comes to $500 per month.

Now, let's also assume you spend ~$55 per month on local and long distance phone calls;  some people spend a little less, and others spend A LOT more!  We'll also assume you spend $24 per month for Internet access, $40 per month on cell phone service, and $45 per month on going out to lunch or dinner (that's based on 3 lunches per week at $5 each).  Finally, let's assume you do your own taxes with a $36 software package, and you spend $48 per year on magazines that could be business-related (e.g., Kiplingers, Forbes, BusinessWeek, WoodWorker, Black Belt Magazine, boat-builder, etc.).  The chart below summarizes all this:

Now, let's assume you could start a business where you could buy $50 worth of grocery and household products from your own business instead of your local store.  You're already spending $500 per month at discount stores and grocery stores, so now you could buy $450 worth from them and $50 from yourself.  Without a doubt, you could replace more than $50 worth of products with those from your own store, but we'll just assume you chose to get only $50 worth from your own business.  That's a very realistic 10% of your current expenditures. Incidentally, that $50 worth of products you're buying now will cost you 30-40% less from your own store, but we're going to ignore that and just assume you get more stuff for your $50 instead of spending less money.  Fair enough?

Call Everyone You Know As Often and For as Long as You Want for FREE!

Now, if you're spending $50 to $55 per month on phone calls now, it's reasonable to expect your phone costs will go up when you have your own business.  So, we'll assume it's worth it for you to spend an extra $5 to $10 per month to get unlimited local and long distance phone calls with free voicemail, 3-way calling, caller ID, call waiting, and speed-dial.  If you already have unlimited calling, then you're already paying $60 or more per month.  Either way, you get to make all the business calls you need to anywhere in the country for the same low price, AND you get to call your friends and family as much and as long as you wish for no extra charge.
